Pressurised Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDI)

Step By Step Guide


1. Check the dose counter
2. Remove the cap
3. Shake well* and hold the inhaler upright
4. Breathe out away from the inhaler
5. Place your mouth around the mouthpiece
6. Press the canister and breathe in deeply at the same time
7. Hold the breath for about 5 seconds or as long as comfortable
8. Remove the inhaler from the mouth
9. Breathe out gently away from the inhaler
10. Replace the cap

*except Fostair and Trimbow Inhalers

Counselling

  • Check the dose counter to ensure enough doses until next supply
  • Make sure the inhaler is not out of date
  • Use a spacer to improve distribution
  • Rinse mouth with water and spit out after using a corticosteroid inhaler

    • Cleaning & Maintenance
  • Clean the mouthpiece with a dry tissue paper
  • For relievers: Remove the metal canister and wash the blue plastic inhaler case once a week
  • For preventers: These inhalers must stay dry and should NEVER be washed with water
  • Replace the inhaler when the dose counter window shows 0
