Body Surface Area (Mosteller Formula) = √ [(Height (cm) × Weight (kg)) ÷ 3600]
Body Surface Area (BSA) cannot be measured practically. It is only a general estimation basing on body height and weight. There are a number of formulas for calculating the estimated BSA, including Mosteller, Du Bois and Du Bois, Haycock et al, Boyd, and Gehan and George. The formula used on this page is the Mostella Formula, as per Australian Medicine Handbook (AMH).
The limitation for using BSA calculation would be the consistency in obese patients, where their actual body weight would be significantly larger than the ideal body weight. The discordance could lead to potential under or overdosing.
